Virginia Gun-Control Laws Have Spurred 125,000 Additional Gun Sales

Driven by the passage of several state gun-control laws, firearms sales this year in Virginia have surged to near-record levels.

Comparing 2026 monthly sales-adjusted figures through May to averages for 2022-2025 shows a total increase of more than 125,000 (see table).

Virginia set state records for April (70,841) and May (74,377), approaching the all-time monthly high of 83,263, set in June 2020.

Virginia also ranked No. 1 nationally in May in sales-adjusted figures per capita (838 per 100,000 population). For the year, Virginia ranks No. 4 (3,853 per 100,000 population), notable given that it is the only state in the top 10 with a population above 5 million. Virginia's population is 8.9 million.
