The FBI released NICS data for the month of May and the national decline continued with an 8 percent decrease, or 153,197 background checks. Nationally, there were 1.78 million background checks for the month of May, the lowest for the month since 2015. There have been 1.17 million fewer background checks through the first five months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.
